It may not have the glitz of St. Moritz,
or the massive lift network of Davos, but this resort in
Central Switzerland
is popular with hardcore skiers who prefer alpine excitement
to
disco action.
Andermatt is an attractive and charming 800
year old village with granite houses lining the dog-leg main
street which
runs from the railway station to the cable car stations.
The village
is located in the Gotthard Massif and is renowned for
having a good snow record, receiving snow from the north, south
and west. Andermatt is 1444m above sea level. It has
3
lift systems
(Gemsstock, Hospental, Oberalppass situated in or near
the village and a few kilometres to the east there is
the ski
resort of Disentis, which will give us plenty of uplift
from which
to start our touring.
The main ski lift, The Gemstock
is a fantastic off-piste resort rivalling the Grandes Montets
and La Grave for
quality of terrain
and quantity of powder snow.
The Oberalppass lifts give
access to the skiing of Sedrun and Disentis. A two-stage
cable car from the
village
serves the
magnificent, varied (and usually empty) slopes of
the Gemsstock.
Across the other side of the town are gentler
slopes of Natschen/Gutsch area. Another ski area is available
at
Hospental along the
valley.
Information about the ski resort can be found on
the web at http://www.andermatt.ch
