The rugged remoteness and sheer beauty of Norway in winter
has inspired us to offer this icefall-climbing trip again
in December 2007. In past years we visited Rjukan in the Telemark
region of Southern Norway, now a
popular
destination
for ice climbers from around the world (and consequently becoming
busier).
For 2007 the ISM trip will take place further
north, in the quieter and more remote regions of Hemsedal and Valdres.
Over the last few years, local activists and dedicated ice
climbers from around the world have transformed these wild
valleys into some of the best ice-climbing venues in
Norway. Our trip into these
regions
will
uncover some of their great classic climbs.
The region's long cold winters
help form some of the best ice to be found anywhere. With their
rugged remoteness, each of these quiet valleys offers great
climbing, and we will split the week between the two venues.
Visiting the area in winter should see daytime temperatures
regularly
falling to minus 10-15 degrees, with dusk at 4.30pm.
Getting there: Travel to Norway is now remarkably
quick, easy and inexpensive. Low cost airlines such as RyanAir
fly daily to Oslo from a number
of UK airports.
We meet your flight and the course convenes there, and then
we travel northwards to Hemsedal by car, about a 2-hour drive
away.
Accommodation We share
self-catering apartments, and all food for the trip is included
in the price.
The course runs from Saturday to Saturday, and gives 5
full days of ice climbing plus time to see and explore a this
beautiful area of Norway while changing venues.
Course requirements To get most out of the
trip you will need to have prior experience of ice climbing
with
two
technical
tools, either gained in
the Alps or in Scotland. Because there are excellent routes
in all grades we can customise the itinerary to take account
of your current climbing grade and aspirations.
