Alpine Climbing – Classic to Extreme

Starting in his teens, Pat’s alpine climbing career spans four decades. In 1982 he qualified as an international mountain guide and in 1983 became Director of ISM. The talk covers all aspects of alpinism from classic guided climbs to extreme first ascents and the Eigerwand.

African Big Walls - first ascents of the N Face of Mt Poi in Kenya and the 900m wall of Jebel Misht in Oman

Attempting the big walls of the world with just a lightweight, ‘trad’ rack of nuts and cams is probably the biggest adventure you can have in rock climbing. Here Pat describes ascents of two remarkable faces in the company of colourful characters like John Barry and Steve Sustad, with nights spent in pocket-sized hammocks bought from an Army Surplus store…

Himalaya Lightweight – the Eight-day first ascent of the NE Pillar of Taweche in the Khumbu valley

Himalayan guru Mal Duff described the NE Pillar of Taweche as ‘one of the best unclimbed features on the planet’. Alternating leads over 43 pitches, Mick Fowler and Pat made the first ascent in 1995. Unrepeated, it remains one of the most technically difficult and committing Himalayan climbs.

Sea Cliff Adventures from SW England to Tenerife

Pat is the most prolific pioneer of British sea-cliff climbing, having made over a thousand first ascents many of which have become national classics. In this talk Pat focuses on the most serious and adventurous of his British climbs then moves to the 600m volcanic sea-cliffs of Tenerife, where things get really exciting…

Virgin summits in the Tien Shan - exploring the mountains of the former Soviet Union

The Tien Shan is the greatest mountain range in Central Asia, extending some 1500 kms across the border between China and Kyrgyzstan. Over the past 10 years ISM ‘Virgin Peaks’ expeditions have led the way in exploring this fantastic region. Pat documents the best of these trips and points the way to future exploration for anyone keen on exploratory mountaineering in a truly wild and remote area.
