Matterhorn Climber
Take an exciting step on your journey towards climbing the Matterhorn. Our five-day Alpine preparation course combines rock climbing, scrambling, expert coaching and a 4000m summit objective, developing the skills, confidence and experience needed to climb this iconic mountain.
For many mountaineers, climbing the Matterhorn is a lifelong dream. Its dramatic shape, famous Hörnli Ridge and place in Alpine climbing history make it one of the most sought-after summits in the world. But achieving that ambition requires more than good mountain fitness and a desire to reach the top.
The Matterhorn is fundamentally a rocky mountain. Its classic ascent involves sustained scrambling, exposed ridges and sections of steeper climbing, all undertaken in mountain boots at altitude. Moving confidently and efficiently over this terrain is essential preparation for an ascent.
Matterhorn Climber is our dedicated five-day Alpine preparation course, designed specifically for mountaineers whose ambition is to climb the Matterhorn.
Throughout the week, you'll enjoy fantastic Alpine climbing on exciting rocky ridges and longer mountain routes, developing the skills and experience needed for the Matterhorn. Building on your progress, we'll aim to finish the week with an attempt on a 4000m Alpine peak, giving you the opportunity to put your new skills into practice and experience the physical demands of climbing at altitude.
Working closely with your ISM Guide in a small team of just two climbers, you'll improve your scrambling technique, develop confident movement in mountain boots and learn to climb efficiently on more exposed terrain, with personal coaching and encouragement throughout the week.
Whether you're an experienced UK scrambler, a Scottish winter climber or someone with previous Alpine experience, Matterhorn Climber offers an exciting and rewarding stepping stone towards your dream.
Our aim is simple: to help you become a more confident, capable and efficient Alpine climber, while taking an important step on your journey towards standing on the summit of this iconic mountain.
Is The Course For Me
Is Matterhorn Climber Right for Me?
Have you always dreamed of climbing the Matterhorn but aren't quite sure how to prepare? Perhaps you've enjoyed hillwalking, scrambling or Scottish winter climbing, but haven't yet gained the experience needed to tackle the Matterhorn's famous Hörnli Ridge.
If that sounds familiar, Matterhorn Climber could be the perfect next step on your journey.
You may already have good mountain fitness, experience using crampons and an understanding of the challenges of mountaineering. What you might be missing is time spent climbing and scrambling on exposed rocky ridges, developing your footwork, balance and confidence in mountain boots.
That's exactly what Matterhorn Climber is designed to help you achieve.
Our five-day course is ideal for anyone with some UK hillwalking, scrambling or Scottish winter climbing experience. You don't need previous Alpine experience or to be an accomplished rock climber, but you should enjoy challenging mountain days, have good fitness and be keen to develop your skills on steeper, more exposed terrain.
As the course focuses on rock ridges and scrambling rather than glacier travel, previous Alpine experience isn't essential. Some basic experience using crampons and an ice axe is beneficial, although not a requirement. Our Summits & Skills 4000m course provides an excellent introduction to these skills and a broader foundation in Alpine mountaineering, but it's not a prerequisite for Matterhorn Climber.
Whether the Matterhorn is your next big ambition or a dream you've held for years, Matterhorn Climber offers an exciting and rewarding step towards making it a reality.
Matterhorn Training
Matterhorn Training
Preparing for the Matterhorn involves much more than simply being fit enough to reach the summit. It's about developing the skills, confidence and efficiency to move safely over steep, exposed terrain, both on the ascent and descent.
Throughout your Matterhorn Climber week, you'll enjoy fantastic days climbing longer Alpine routes and exposed rocky ridges, developing your scrambling technique, movement in mountain boots and essential ropework. These adventures offer similar challenges to the Matterhorn's famous Hörnli Ridge, providing valuable experience on more committing mountain terrain.
One of the most important aspects of Matterhorn preparation is learning how to descend. Reaching the summit is only half the challenge. You'll then need to descend the ground you've climbed, often when tired and concentration is harder to maintain. We'll practise efficient downclimbing, abseiling, lowering techniques and route finding – skills that are often overlooked but absolutely crucial on a long Alpine ridge.
Building on your progress, we'll aim to finish the week with an ascent of a 4000m Alpine peak, putting your skills into practice on a longer, more demanding mountain day. It's a fantastic opportunity to experience climbing at altitude, understand how your body responds and appreciate the physical and technical demands of a future Matterhorn ascent.
Throughout the week, your ISM Guide will provide personal coaching, encouragement and honest feedback, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and understand your strengths and areas for further development. You'll leave with a clearer picture of your readiness and the next steps towards your Matterhorn ambition.
The better prepared you are, the more you'll be able to contribute to your own ascent, enjoy the climbing and appreciate the achievement. Our aim is to help you become an active, confident participant in your Matterhorn adventure, making that eventual summit all the more rewarding.

Working closely with your ISM Guide, we'll focus on developing confident movement in mountain boots, improving your scrambling and climbing techniques and practising the essential ropework needed for longer, more exposed Alpine ridges.
Throughout the day, your Guide will get to know your experience and ability, offering individual coaching and helping you develop the skills we'll build upon during the rest of the week.

Tuesday – Perrons Traverse, Alpine Rock Ridge Climbing
Today we head towards the head of the Chamonix Valley and the spectacular Perrons Traverse, high above the Emosson Dam.
This is a fantastic Alpine rock ridge adventure, combining sustained scrambling, easy rock climbing, exposed sections and a variety of interesting climbing and descending challenges.
Building on Monday's training, you'll put your skills into practice on a longer and more committing mountain route. We'll focus on efficient movement in mountain boots, short roping, route finding, downclimbing, lowering and abseiling, all important skills for a future Matterhorn ascent.
The Perrons is also an excellent opportunity to experience the demands of a longer mountain day, developing stamina, concentration and confidence on exposed terrain.
After a rewarding day in the mountains, we return to Hotel PlanB for our third night.
Wednesday – Saas Valley & Almageller Hut
Following our previous two days of climbing, today offers a welcome change of pace as we travel into Switzerland and the beautiful Saas Valley.
From Saas-Almagell, we'll make our way up to the Almageller Hut (2,894m), enjoying a steady approach through spectacular mountain scenery beneath the surrounding peaks.
The afternoon provides time to relax, recover and prepare for our 4000m summit objective. We'll discuss the route, refresh any necessary skills and talk through the physical and technical challenges of the following day's climb.
We spend the first of two nights at the Almageller Hut, enjoying the atmosphere of a traditional high Alpine mountain hut.
Thursday – Weissmies South Ridge (4,017m)
Today brings one of the highlights of the week: an attempt to climb the magnificent Weissmies (4,017m) by its South Ridge.
After an early Alpine start, we'll make our way towards the ridge, enjoying sustained scrambling and easy climbing on rocky terrain before reaching the final snow ridge leading towards the summit.
The ascent provides excellent preparation for the Matterhorn, combining movement in mountain boots, exposed scrambling, route finding and the physical demands of climbing at altitude.
Reaching a 4000m Alpine summit is a fantastic achievement in its own right, with spectacular views across the surrounding Swiss Alps.
But our day doesn't finish at the summit. We'll descend carefully by the same route, putting particular emphasis on efficient downclimbing, ropework, concentration and maintaining a steady pace when tired.
This is an important part of your Matterhorn preparation, helping you understand the demands of a long Alpine ascent and descent, and how you respond physically and technically at altitude.
We return to the Almageller Hut for a well-earned rest and our second night in the mountains.
Friday – Dri Hörnli, Alpine Rock Ridge Climbing
For our final climbing day, we head onto Dri Hörnli, close to the Almageller Hut, for another enjoyable Alpine rock ridge adventure.
After the physical challenge of the Weissmies, today offers an opportunity to consolidate the skills developed throughout the week, with further scrambling, climbing in mountain boots, route finding and descending on rocky terrain.
Working closely with your ISM Guide, you'll have the chance to reflect on your progress, ask questions and receive valuable feedback about your climbing ability, mountain fitness and any further preparation that may help towards your Matterhorn ambition.
After our climb, we'll descend to the valley and travel back to Hotel PlanB in Le Fayet, where we'll spend our final night.
Saturday Morning – Departure
Breakfast at the hotel is included before departure.
A Flexible Mountain Programme
This is a sample programme, and the order of climbs, choice of routes and timing of our 4000m summit attempt may change depending on weather, mountain conditions and the experience and ability of the group.
Your ISM Guide will carefully assess conditions and your progress throughout the week, choosing suitable objectives that provide the best opportunities for learning, developing confidence and enjoying some fantastic Alpine climbing.
Our aim is to give you a rewarding and memorable week in the mountains, helping you develop the skills, experience and understanding needed for a future Matterhorn ascent.
The better prepared you are, the more you'll be able to contribute to your own ascent, enjoy the climbing and appreciate the achievement.
