Embark on an unforgettable five-day expedition that blends cultural discovery with high-altitude adventure in Morocco. This carefully curated journey offers the perfect balance: two days exploring the historic and vibrant city of Marrakesh, coupled with a three-day trek through the breath taking High Atlas Mountains, culminating in the ascent of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak, for sunrise!
What to expect
Your adventure begins in Marrakesh, where you’ll meet your group and expedition leader. We will stay in a traditional riad tucked within the heart of the medina (old town). Here, you’ll experience the city’s rich history, colourful souks, intricate architecture, and lively atmosphere. From wandering bustling (markets) to sampling local cuisine, Marrakesh offers a sensory immersion into Moroccan culture.
Leaving the city behind, the expedition transitions into the rugged beauty of the High Atlas Mountains. We will travel to the Berber village of Imlil where we will meet our registered Moroccan mountain guide. Over the three days of trekking, we will journey through remote valleys, traditional Berber villages, and dramatic mountain landscapes. Nights will be spent in a traditional mountain hut, providing a simple yet authentic glimpse into life in the mountains and a chance to connect with your fellow travellers in a unique setting.
The highlight of the trek is an early morning ascent of Mount Toubkal, where we will reach the summit in time for sunrise - an unforgettable moment as the first light stretches across the peaks of the Atlas range.
Throughout the expedition, you’ll travel as part of a warm and welcoming group, sharing the experience with like-minded adventurers. Whether you’re drawn to this expedition by cultural exploration, physical challenge, or meaningful connection, this journey offers a truly enriching Moroccan experience both in the heart of the city and high in the mountains.
Pre-requisites & Fitness Requirements
This expedition is designed for adventurous travellers with a good level of fitness and a positive, team-oriented mindset. While no technical climbing experience is required, the trek does involve sustained physical effort over multiple days at altitude.
Fitness Level
You should be comfortable hiking for 5–7 hours per day across varied terrain, including rocky paths, steep ascents, and uneven ground. A good baseline would be the ability to complete full-day hikes in hilly or mountainous areas while carrying a light daypack. Cardiovascular fitness and leg strength are particularly important, as the ascent of Mount Toubkal involves a steady climb to high altitude.
Experience
No prior mountaineering or technical skills are needed. However, previous trekking or hiking experience (especially multi-day hikes) will make the experience more enjoyable and manageable.
Altitude Considerations
The trek reaches elevations above 4,000m, so a basic understanding of how your body responds to altitude is helpful. While the itinerary is designed to allow for gradual acclimatisation, you should be prepared for thinner air and cooler temperatures, especially during the summit push.
Health & Preparation
Participants should be in good general health with no unmanaged medical conditions that could be affected by sustained physical activity or altitude. It’s recommended to prepare in advance with regular cardio exercise (such as hiking, running, or cycling) and some strength training.
Mindset
Equally important is a flexible and positive attitude. Conditions in the mountains and medina of Marrakesh can be unpredictable, and a willingness to embrace new experiences, different cultures, and group dynamics will enhance the journey.
If you’re unsure whether this expedition is right for your fitness level, feel free to ask for guidance - we’re happy to help you prepare!
