Ski-Safari-2

On this tour skiing time is maximised by using the lift systems of Diablerets, Gstaad and Lenk, and by doing short touring sections we can complete our journey across the northern slopes of the western Oberland from Leysin to Kandersteg. The trip travels through the Saanental and shows Switzerland at it prettiest.

We stay in very comfortable rustic mountain huts which are situated on or near the piste.

The touring sections with skins are normally about 2 hours per day and give us access to superb descents which combine off-piste and on-piste skiing. During the week ski technique and instruction will be given to help with your skiing. We stay in comfortable resort hotels and in mountain hostels (next to the piste) throughout the week.

Ski-Safari
Is This Course For Me?

It is ideal for the enthusiastic skier who wants to travel through a mountain region away from ski pistes, but doesn't want to spend too much time skinning uphill to achieve the back country experience.

Ski ability required: Effective turns off-piste, good general fitness.

Sample Programme

Day 1
A warm up day to check equipment, brush up ski technique and ease ourselves back into ski mode. Using the Leysin village lift system we make a ski-tour around the Leysin Tours (2200m) for stunning views of the north wall of Les Diablerets (3209m) and the Mont Blanc massif. Another night at the Hotel le Grand Chalet.

Day 2
Using the Diablerets lift we make an ascent of the Walighurli (2050m) and descend to Feutersoey. This is a lovely tour in a remote valley and the Walighurli gives a fantastic descent to Feutersoey. The Post bus and train take us to Saanen Moser where we stay in a mountain hostel.

Day 3
We take the lift from Saanenmoser to Gandlauengrat (2005m) then a short ski down to a col (1700m) before making a ski ascent of the airy Wisttathorn (2362m). Ski down an east facing rib through powder fields to St Stephen (1000m, 1300m of descent) and hotel on the piste system above Lenk.

Day 4
We use the Lenk/Adelboden system to explore some excellent off piste runs. The off piste run down from Regenboldshorn (2193m) to Simmenfalle (1100m) is a very scenic run which has great ambience being in the shadow of the remote Ammertentalli valley with its impressive cliffs. We then descend some great off piste to Adelboden and take the bus and lift to Engstligen Alp to stay at the Berghotel Bartschi (another mountain hostel).

Day 5
We take the drag lift to 2400m and then climb the Tierhornli (2894m). We can then descend into the Uschenetal, which gives a fantastic north facing descent to Kandersteg (1200m). The impressive rock architecture is breath taking, 1600m of descent. Taxi/train back to Leysin.
