Sardinia - Rock Climbing Courses and Guided Climbing

After many requests from our clients for rock climbing trips in the months before and after the alpine season, we have decided to offer Sardinia as perhaps the finest of all the ‘Sun Rock’ destinations around the Mediterranean. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and lies about 120 miles west of the Italian coast.

Masua sea cliffs

Some sport climbing venues around the Med distinctly lack an adventurous or ‘wilderness’ ambience. Not so Sardinia - its spectacular and unspoilt coastline features wind-sculpted granite boulders and cliffs in the north, and magnificent cliffs of weathered limestone (interspersed with small fishing villages) overlook transparent blue seas along the south and east coasts. Inland, the landscape is rugged and mountainous, giving opportunities for longer mountain routes above remote gorges and olive groves. It is a very special climbing destination and will treat any standard of climber to an adventurous holiday with climbing of the highest quality.

Climbing on La Poltrona

From sea-cliff climbing to the more remote cliffs inland, we climb at a variety of locations normally using two different bases, allowing us to explore much of Sardinia and to sample its culture and cuisine. Below is a selection of the venues we can visit during a one-week trip to the island.

Cala Gonone

One of the first places to visit will be Cala Gonone in the east/central area of the island. This classical Italian town is nestled in a small bay and has spectacular views across the sea and mountains behind. Cala Gonone is a great base and is within easy reach of a vast number of limestone crags ranging from 20 metres to 300 metres in height and covering all grades.

Jerzu

Jerzu is situated inland just to the south of Cala Gonone. On the outskirts lies a relatively undeveloped area, offering adventurous climbing on big walls set in beautiful mountain scenery. This largely unvisited area guarantees an ‘away from it all’ experience and promises fantastic climbing on big limestone walls.

Climbing on La Pentagramma

Iglesias

This small town nestled in the south west corner of the island is the perfect base for enjoying sea-cliff climbing at its best. The west coast is littered with amazing limestone cliffs and glorious coastal scenery, offering the climber not only immaculate rock and a range of quality routes to choose from, but also a chance to discover another part of this beautiful island.

When to visit Sardinia & costs

We can arrange trips to Sardinia for individuals, pairs of climbers or teams of three, throughout April and May, as well as through the period from mid-October till mid-December. A one-week holiday is ideal but we are happy to arrange shorter or longer trips. We work out a 'Custom Course' price for you when you enquire based on guiding rates similar to those we charge for our UK courses.

Sardinia climbing trips are run by UIAGM/IFMGA mountain guides from our core team, and the routes and itineraries will be carefully tailored to suit your climbing standard and preferences.

Who the course will suit

A minimum rock climbing standard of Very Severe (American 5.7) will enable you to take full advantage of the climbing on Sardinia. We can help you to reach this grade rapidly if you do not already climb to this standard (see Climbing Courses UK)
