The Valley is embedded in the famous alpine passes of Grimsel, Susten and Grosse Scheidegg. We shall be skiing in the area of the Susten pass which has excellent choices of quality glaciated ski touring peaks to climb with stunning views of the Oberland and surrounding peaks in the Urner Alps. A hidden gem of a venue. The jagged granite peaks give a unique ambience to this area.

Course Highlights

  • Ski and explore the remote peaks of central Switzerland
  • Enjoy some great skiing in a quiet corner of the Alps
  • Comfortable 3 star accommodation in a beautiful alpine setting

The course meets in the old market town of Meiringen which is now a mountain ski resort which lies just north east of Interlaken. Meiringen is famous for the exploits of Sherlock Holmes and his ‘last’ fight with archenemy Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach falls. Meiringen hosts tourist sites such as the Sherlock Holmes museum and the ruined castle of Restiturm which lies just to the east of the centre of Meiringen, and once commanded the various trade routes that passed through the town. It is also the gateway to the Haslital and the Susten pass.

Sample Programme

Day 1
We transfer from Mieringen and ascend to the Steingletscher Hotel, which is a comfortable hotel nestled in the mountains. Transceiver practice in the afternoon.

Day 2
After an early start we leave the hotel and skin up the gentle slopes to the summit of the Giglistock (2900m) which has superb views of the surrounding peaks. We then prepare for the classic descent of the Giglistock's North Face which takes us across the glacier and back to the Steingletscher hotel where we spend a second night.

Day 3
We ski and explore the Sustenhorn (3503m) and the Gwachtenhorn (3375m). The Sustenhorn is the highest peak in the area and both of these peaks have a commanding view point of the Bernese Oberland and peaks of the Urner Alps to the east. We descend the fabulous Steingletscher back the Steingletscher Hotel.

Day 4
We ski the Funffingerstock (2994m). We venture to the north of the Susten Pass and explore the complex and striking pinnacles of the Funffingerstock. We spend the night in the cosy Sustli Hut.

Day 5
The ascent of the Grassen (2940m) is a fitting challenge for the last day. A steady climb leads to a fine snow ridge to access the summit. The impressive rock walls of Titlus to the north and endless jagged peaks of the Oberland to the south are rewarding. The ski descent from the summit firstly down the north facing glacier and then to the west and back to Gadman gives an excellent climax to the trip. We then descend and return to Meiringen.
