With frequent low-cost flights to Geneva from
many UK airports, getting to Switzerland for an active break
has never been easier. A long weekend gives 3 full days of
climbing, so you can enjoy an exhilarating, satisfying (and
exhausting!) ice-climbing trip using a minimal amount of holiday
time.
For 2008 we will be running these weekends in
the ice-climbing centre of the Val de Bagnes in the Verbier
region of Switzerland.
From here we can access several superb ice climbing
venues, both within Switzerland and over the border
into France or Italy. The choice of venues guarantees good
ice climbing
conditions and a great selection of routes at all grades.
Local ice climbing
is excellent being just a short drive up the valley towards
the Barrage de Mauvoisin / Fionnay. The setting is impressive
and mountainous, with peaks like Le Pleureur providing an
impressive backdrop. Routes range from 1-5 pitches, with
a spread of grades from 3-5. The approaches are short and
the terrain is friendly. In less than 1 hour's drive from
Le Chable we can also access the ice climbing in other Swiss
valleys and at Trient on the French border.
You arrive at our hotel in the village of Le Chable (easily
accessed by train from Geneva Airport) at any time on Thursday
evening, meet your guide over
breakfast
on
Friday
then head
straight
for
the icefalls. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are spent
climbing then we take you back to a main line station in
time to catch your flight back to the UK on Sunday evening
(or back to the hotel in Le Chable if you decide to stay longer).
We pitch the course at the right level for course participants,
making up balanced climbing teams. Previous ice climbing experience
is desirable but climbing grade is not important - we can
cater for a range of standards and give each individual the
instruction/guidance he or she requires.
Please note: as most people taking this
course arrive late on Thursday evening, the meals provided
begin with breakfast on the Friday morning.
